About the School

Mount Carmel Secondary School is a voluntary Catholic secondary school for girls under the patronage of the Religious Sisters of Charity. It is situated in the centre of Dublin, just a short walk from O’Connell Street or from the Jervis stop on the Red Luas line.

The school participates in the Department of Education and Skills’ School Support Programme under the Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools (DEIS) action plan. As part of this, Mount Carmel is involved in the School Completion Programme (SCP).

Fifty percent of the students enrolled in the school come from outside of Ireland, from thirty two different countries. The majority of these students come from Poland, Romania and Lithuania but other countries including Mauritius, Nigeria and China are also represented.

In contrast to earlier periods in the school’s history, the student population is now very diverse. One third of these students study Irish despite having been granted an exemption from the subject.

There are currently 383 students enrolled in the school. In addition to the newcomer population, students come from the local primary schools in the immediate catchment area. In the last four years, enrolment has increased by 25%.

History

Mount Carmel Secondary School is a Catholic school for girls. It was founded by the Religious Sisters of Charity and is the oldest secondary school in Dublin city centre with its roots dating back to 1812.

While maintaining a strong Catholic tradition and ethos, we welcome students from every religious tradition as well as students with no religious tradition. While many of our students are from Dublin we also have students of various nationalities, believing that all are enriched by the experience and culture of fellow human beings.

True to the inspiring vision of our foundress, Mary Aikenhead, we seek to foster in all our students a deep respect and compassion for all people, especially those who are most vulnerable and in need have practical help.

Location

Mount Carmel is situated on King’s Inns Street in the heart of the city centre. It is next door to DIT, Bolton Street, and only a five minute walk from O’Connell Street.

Our city centre location is convenient for students travelling from all areas of Dublin. It is served by numerous buses to Parnell Square and is just five minutes from the Jervis Street stop on the Luas Red Line and just around the Dominic Street stop on the Green Line.

Due to our central location, our students can readily avail of visits to art galleries, museums and places of historical and geographical interest. This is a valuable asset for students who must carry out field studies and projects as part of their course work.
