Our JCSP Library

Mount Carmel’s school library is a JCSP Project Library run by two qualified librarians, Siobhain and Jenny.

Our students have access to the library before school, during lunchtime and after school as well as scheduled library classes for all Junior Cycle students and some Senior Cycle students. All our students are expected to read on a regular basis and borrowing books is part of daily life in our school.

It has been proven that access to reading materials and the encouragement of reading for pleasure increases test scores in all subjects. The library at Mount Carmel is one of 30 JCSP Demonstration Libraries in the country.

The following is a sample of the wide range of activities in our library:

  • Author visits and residencies
  • Staff and student Book Clubs
  • Timetabled reading classes
  • Borrowing books for leisure reading
  • Library and information skills training
  • Creative writing
  • Numeracy Programmes
  • Literacy and numeracy games
  • WRaPParound—Writing, Reading and Performance Poetry
  • Reading Challenges
  • Drop Everything And Read
  • Bibliotherapy Initiative with Jigsaw ‘Read Your Mind’
