Update from Mr. O'Riordan

2026/03/13 14:20:02

Dear Mount Carmel Community,

As I write, a group of our Fifth Year students and accompanying staff are beginning their journey home after a memorable week in Paris. They have spent the past number of days exploring the city’s cultural landmarks and experiencing school life in Lycée Diderot. The Erasmus Programme has once again provided our students with an invaluable opportunity to broaden their horizons and strengthen our ties with our fellow European citizens.

On Wednesday evening Kyla, Hana, and Genaiza represented our school with exceptional creativity and confidence in the Junk Kouture Regional Final in the Helix. Reaching this stage is a remarkable achievement, and we are immensely proud of them. I would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Bourke for his unwavering support and guidance throughout their journey.

Yesterday, our volleyball team competed in the All-Ireland semi-final, narrowly missing out on a place in the final. The team, along with their coach Mr. Longauer, demonstrated outstanding skill, determination, and sportsmanship—further evidence of the diverse talents that enrich our school community. We congratulate them on their tremendous efforts.

Meanwhile, the school has been alive with traditional Irish music throughout the week as each class prepared for today’s Céilí Mór. It has been a joy to witness such energy and enthusiasm. Our Gaeilge Department has worked tirelessly to create a vibrant and engaging Seachtain na Gaeilge, offering us all the opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate our language, culture, and heritage.

Today, we also take a moment to remember Thomas Francis Meagher—himself Jesuit-educated—who designed the Tricolour as a symbol of peace and reconciliation. His vision resonates strongly within our own community. At Mount Carmel, we are a diverse and dynamic school of 400 students and 60 staff, representing 37 nationalities. Each individual contributes uniquely to the life of our school, enriching it with their talents, perspectives, and gifts.

This Seachtain na Gaeilge, we proudly fly the Tricolour as a reflection of who we are: a school that embodies the best of modern Ireland—open, inclusive, and grounded in our Jesuit ethos, which calls on us to honour the inherent dignity of every member of our community.

Beannachtaí na féile Pádraig oraibh go léir.
